What the Grade Calculator does

- Uses a weighted-average equation with your current grade, completed weight, desired final grade, and final exam weight.

How to use the Grade Calculator
- Enter your current grade as a percentage for the completed work represented by the completed weight.
- Enter the completed weight and final exam weight as percentages, such as 70 and 30, not 0.70 and 0.30.
- Enter your desired final grade, click Calculate, and check the estimate against your course or institution's grading policy.
Formula / methodology used
- The calculator solves: desired overall grade = current grade × completed weight + required final exam grade × final exam weight, with weights converted from percentages to decimals.
- Required final exam grade = (desired − current × (completed weight ÷ 100)) ÷ (final exam weight ÷ 100).
- The result is rounded to 2 decimal places and may be below 0 or above 100 if the target is already secured or may be unreachable under the entered weights.
Example calculation
Current grade 82%, completed weight 70%, desired final grade 85%, final exam weight 30%.
- Completed contribution = 82 × (70 ÷ 100) = 82 × 0.70 = 57.4
- Points still needed toward the overall grade = 85 − 57.4 = 27.6
- Required final exam grade = 27.6 ÷ 0.30 = 92.0
Result: The calculator would estimate that you need 92.00% on the final exam to reach an 85% overall grade, before any course-specific rounding, curve, or extra-credit rules.
Common mistakes and limitations
- The estimate assumes the entered current grade and completed weight accurately represent all completed work.
- It does not model every grading category, curve, extra-credit policy, missing-assignment rule, resit option, attendance requirement, minimum exam threshold, or institution-specific rounding rule.
- If completed weight and final exam weight do not describe the grading scheme you intend, the result will be misleading.

What if the required score is over 100%?
That usually means the target may be unreachable under the entered current grade and weights unless your course allows extra credit, curves, resits, dropped assignments, or other adjustments.
What if the required score is negative?
A negative result can mean your target is already mathematically met under the entered assumptions. Your official grade can still depend on attendance, minimum exam scores, pass/fail rules, or other policies.
Will this match my teacher's gradebook?
Not necessarily. Grading policies vary by institution, course, teacher, category weighting, rounding rules, missing assignments, curves, extra credit, resits, and pass/fail requirements. Check with your course or institution.
