What the Percentage Calculator does
- Calculates the value of a percentage of a number based on your inputs, such as 15% of 240 or 7.5% of a bill.
- Helps estimate discounts, increases, comparisons, rates, marks, tips, tax-style add-ons, and other everyday maths checks.
- Works as a general maths tool: it returns the percentage value only, so you decide whether to add, subtract, or compare it.
How to use the Percentage Calculator
- Enter the base number you want to calculate a percentage from.
- Enter the percentage as a percent value, for example enter 18 for 18%, not 0.18.
- Click Calculate and review the estimate based on your inputs before using it in finance, tax, grades, or business decisions.
Formula / methodology used
- Formula: percentage value = number × (percentage ÷ 100).
- The calculator converts the entered percentage to a decimal first; for example, 18% becomes 0.18.
- The displayed result is rounded to 2 decimal places for readability.
Example calculation
A $240 service invoice includes an estimated 18% fee.
- Number = 240
- Percentage = 18
- Percentage value = 240 × (18 ÷ 100) = 240 × 0.18 = 43.2
Result: The estimated percentage value is $43.20. If the fee is added to the invoice, the estimated total would be $283.20.
Common mistakes and limitations
- Enter 15 when you mean 15%; do not enter 0.15 unless you intentionally mean 0.15%.
- The calculator estimates a simple percentage of a number and does not model compounding, percentage change, margin, markup, tax rules, grading policies, or business-specific rules.
- Rounding to 2 decimal places can create small differences compared with unrounded manual calculations.
Important note
This percentage calculator is a general maths tool. Results are mathematical estimates based on your inputs and are not financial, tax, grading, business, retail, or legal advice.
